Soft power at work
Listen to article
Pakistan’s diaspora, the seventh largest in the world, according to the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, is an invaluable asset to the country. With over nine million Pakistanis living abroad, this dynamic community is a critical driver of economic growth, cultural diplomacy and global goodwill. The contributions of overseas Pakistanis not only support the nation’s economy but also enhance its international image, demonstrating the significant role of soft power in shaping Pakistan’s global standing.
The financial impact of the Pakistani diaspora cannot be overstated. In FY23, remittances from overseas Pakistanis reached a record high of over $26 billion. This inflow of funds constitutes a major source of foreign exchange, strengthening the national economy and reducing poverty for countless families. Key contributors include expatriates in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the US and the UK. At the country level, Saudi Arabia has remained the primary source of remittance inflows, sending around $4.4 billion – representing almost a quarter (24%) of the total volume. The UAE and the UK ranked second and third, respectively, remitting $3.1 billion (17%) and $2.7 billion (15%) from July to February of FY24.
Programmes such as the Roshan Digital Accounts have further enhanced the diaspora’s economic engagement. The initiatives help overseas Pakistanis invest safely in local real estate and government bonds along with the stock market which draws foreign money into Pakistan’s economy.
In addition to their financial investments the Pakistani diaspora helps promote and represent their culture worldwide. In the US, the Pakistani-American community proves its success through strong performances in medical science, technology, academics and art. Their achievements highlight the potential and resilience of Pakistanis, countering stereotypes and fostering a more nuanced understanding of the country.
According to a Pew Research Center survey, 53% of Pakistanis living abroad believe their presence positively impacts perceptions of Pakistan in their host countries. From organising cultural festivals and exhibitions to participating in community initiatives, these expatriates build bridges between Pakistan and the rest of the world, enhancing mutual respect and cooperation.
The diaspora’s engagement in political advocacy is another significant facet of its soft power. In the US, Pakistani Americans have initiated grassroots campaigns to engage with Congress on issues such as Pak-US relations, human rights and the Kashmir situation. Similarly, the Pakistani community in the UK works hard to promote policies that build better connections between the UK and Pakistan.
The diaspora’s role extends beyond cultural representation and economic support. In Australia, Pakistani Australians advocate for educational opportunities for Pakistani students, fostering academic exchanges and long-term bilateral relationships. Many overseas Pakistanis have emerged as leaders in technology, entrepreneurship and social innovation, setting benchmarks that reflect positively on Pakistan.
The Pakistani diaspora exemplifies how soft power can be harnessed to improve a nation’s image and influence globally. Through remittances, investments, cultural diplomacy and political advocacy, overseas Pakistanis contribute to the nation’s development while promoting its interests abroad. However, for these efforts to reach their full potential, the diaspora must unite in representing Pakistan’s national interests rather than advancing political factions. Divisions and politically charged rhetoric within the diaspora can undermine its purpose, clouding its ability to project a cohesive and positive image of Pakistan.
As Pakistan continues to navigate the complexities of globalisation, leveraging the soft power of its diaspora will remain essential. By recognising and supporting this vibrant community while promoting unity and purpose, Pakistan can further enhance its global presence, ensuring a future where its voice and values resonate strongly on the world stage.
