Actor Kwon Sang Woo “I want to show my son fun movies”
Kwon Sang Woo, a versatile actor who has successfully taken on roles in melodrama, action, and comedy, reflects on his 20 years in the Korean film industry. Known for his wide-ranging talents, Kwon is one of the few actors capable of excelling in multiple genres.
In an interview, Kwon shared how his acting journey began unexpectedly with a movie ticket from his uncle. He recalled, “My uncle gave me a ticket to see Al Pacino‘s ‘Scarface.’ I went to see it alone, and it shocked me. I didn’t tell anyone, but I believe that’s when the dream of becoming an actor began.”
After completing his military service, Kwon quickly dove into acting. He recalled how his early role in My Tutor Friend turned him into one of the most talked-about actors in the industry, saying, “I didn’t have any formal training, but I was lucky enough to be supported by many people who gave me courage.” His fame grew with hit projects like the drama Heaven’s Stairway and the film Volatile Youth.
Reflecting on his rise to stardom, Kwon said, “I never imagined that ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and ‘Once Upon a Time in High School’ would stay with me as memorable projects even 10 or 20 years later.”
Despite early success, Kwon also experienced a slump, but as he grew older and became a family man, his approach to acting matured. “When I was younger, I didn’t feel much pressure. After getting married, though, I started seeing things differently and became more mature in my approach to acting,” he explained.
Kwon’s recent films, including ‘The Accidental Detective,’ and ‘Hitman: Agent Jun,’ have cemented his reputation as a reliable and versatile actor. He shared, “I’ve always been drawn to mid-budget films. While big-budget projects are appealing, what matters most is being able to showcase my own charm and pursue interesting, fun stories.”
His upcoming movie ‘Hitman 2′ is especially meaningful to him. “It’s a gift for my son, who loved the first Hitman, and for my family,” Kwon said.
