Wyndmere science teacher honored with presidential award – InForum
WYNDMERE, N.D. — On Friday, Jan. 24, Wyndmere Public School celebrated one of its own, science teacher Amber Fyre, who received the Presidential Award of Excellence for Math and Science Teaching earlier this month.
Fyre, an educator for 19 years and the school’s science teacher since 2021, is one of only 101 recipients nationwide to receive the award this year. Students and staff came together to honor her achievements and the positive impact she’s had on the school.
“She’s someone I’ve leaned on,” said Principal Scott Strenge. “The way she captivates a classroom, teaches to very high standards, and connects with students at all levels is truly remarkable.”
Fyre teaches six science courses and is known for bringing real-world learning into her classroom, including a standout lesson involving NASA.
“She brought in professors from NASA,” Strenge said.
“It was work an actual NASA scientist would do,” Fyre explained. “The kids used their chemistry knowledge to meet North Dakota standards, and it was amazing to see them apply what they learned.
Fyre was deeply moved during the schoolwide celebration, especially when her students cheered for her and shared hugs.
“All teachers do this for the kids,” Fyre said, holding back tears. “When they tell me they love me and cheer for me, it validates the work we put in.”
She hopes her award serves as a reminder of the need to honor teachers everywhere.
“There are so many great teachers, not just in my school but in schools everywhere,” she said. “It makes you think there should be more recognition for the work teachers do every day.
Fyre’s recognition includes a $10,000 award and an invitation to the White House. Principal Strenge says the school plans to host a special send-off for her as she prepares for her trip.
