Mumbai Coastal Road Project: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Eknath Shinde on Sunday marked a new era of connectivity in Mumbai with the inauguration of the North Channel Bridge, linking the Coastal Road Project to the Worli-Bandra Sea Link.
The bow-string arch bridge will become operational for vehicular traffic on January 27, reducing the travel time between Bandra and Marine Drive and vice versa to just 10 minutes.
Along with the bridge inauguration, CM Fadnavis also launched four new interchange arms of Worli and Haji Ali on Sunday.
The inauguration of the North Channel Bridge has become a pivotal moment in advancing the first phase of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP), which saw a partial launch in March 2024.

How Will It Ease Travel?
- Earlier, the bow-string arch bridge was only partially open for northbound traffic (on the southbound carriageway).
- The northbound carriageway’s inauguration will allow southbound traffic from the sea link to flow into the coastal road.
- It will reduce travel time between Marine Drive and Bandra to 10 minutes (from the previous one-hour duration).
- The bridge will operate daily from 7 am to midnight, according to official orders.
- Four new interchange arms at Worli and Haji Ali will help vehicles exit towards key junctions.
Bow-String Arch Bridge: All You Need To Know
The new northbound bridge spans 827 meters, with 699 meters over the sea and 128 meters connecting to the land.
Built using the “Bo Arch String Girder” design, the bridge is 143 meters long, 27 meters wide, and 31 meters high, weighing approximately 2,400 metric tons.
The Mumbai Coastal Road Project, which spans from Nariman Point to Dahisar, aims to improve transit between South Mumbai and the northern suburbs.
The officials said that the first phase of the project, from Shamal Das Gandhi Marg to the Worli-Bandra Sea Link, is nearly 94 per cent complete.
The coastal road, operational from March 12 to December 31, 2024, saw over 50 lakh vehicles using it, with an average daily traffic of 18,000 to 20,000 vehicles.
