In Delhi, a music bus takes Indian classical music to the community
This occasion marks the launch of a new initiative – a mobile music school called Naad Safar, that aims to provide structured music education to historically underserved communities. Naad Safar (translating to ‘music travels’) is helmed by the Manzil Mystics Foundation, a Delhi-based music-focused NGO and community choir for low income groups. Initially envisioned as a solution to address the lack of recording studios and music infrastructure in many schools in the capital, the music bus first started in 2021 and has spread much good cheer since then. Its second iteration launched just last year is in collaboration with Naadvistaar, aiming to increase the focus on classical and folk music.

The cheerily painted vehicle with large windows is a CNG bus that runs upto eight hours without electricity. On board, there are musical instruments, a recording studio, and an incredibly-designed fold-out stage that emerges from one side for live performances.
This moving music mobile rolls through Delhi NCR, visiting schools picked by the Directorate of Education of the Delhi government in collaboration with community-based nonprofit organisations like the Samarpan Foundation, ensuring that it reaches areas and children who would otherwise never have access to musical facilities.
One section of the bus acts as a music classroom, kitted out with the perfect acoustics. Here, twelve fellows selected by the Manzil Mystics team conduct weekly classes for children of these schools.
