Music teacher’s legacy is numerous musicians

The 88 keys on the piano Nancy Dew Weems’ parents bought for her when she was a second-grader in Crossett have unlocked opportunities for her around the world.

Weems, 73, retired in 2019 after almost three decades of teaching at the University of Houston, ultimately as the Madison Endowed Professor of Piano at the Moores School of Music.

In 1983, about a year after she arrived on that campus, she won the U.S. Artistic Ambassador Competition, sponsored by the U.S. Information Agency.

“Those are the people who are kind of responsible for our cultural exchanges between the U.S. and other countries all over the world, and they sponsored the competition that would send out several young artists at that time,” Weems says.
