Thailand pushes for fair, inclusive solutions to rising protectionism at informal WTO ministerial talks

Minister Pichai Naripthaphan underscores Thailand’s commitment to multilateral trade systems at the WTO gathering in Davos.

DAVOS, Switzerland – Pichai Naripthaphan, Minister of Commerce, participated in the Informal WTO Ministerial Gathering (IMG) held at Hotel Morosani Schweizerhof in Davos, Switzerland. The meeting addressed increasing concerns over rising trade protectionism and sought collective solutions to the issue.

Following the meeting, Minister Pichai emphasized the critical role of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in supporting the multilateral trade system to manage escalating trade tensions. He outlined Thailand’s key priorities for the upcoming 14th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC14), scheduled for March 2026 in Cameroon. These include agriculture and food security to promote sustainable trade and food access, concluding the second phase of fisheries subsidy negotiations for mutual benefit, and advancing digital and environmental trade policies.

Minister Pichai stated, “This WTO meeting highlighted growing concerns over the increasing use of trade protectionist measures. WTO member states must collaborate to develop fair and inclusive solutions that support global trade expansion.”

During discussions, new trade topics were raised, including the borderless digital economy and the need for regulations to keep pace with global trends. Thailand, as the chair of the Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA), has garnered broad support from WTO members and aims to accelerate its implementation.

In Davos, Minister Pichai also met with Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, WTO Director-General, to reaffirm Thailand’s commitment to leading and supporting a robust multilateral trade system. The discussions aimed to strengthen confidence among global trade partners and investors while reinforcing Thailand’s active role in the global trade arena.

The World Trade Organization, established in 1995, currently has 166 member states. It serves as a platform for negotiating, implementing, and overseeing international trade regulations, reducing trade barriers, and promoting fair and freer trade. Additionally, it plays a vital role in resolving trade disputes among member nations. (TNA)
