As revealed by Tubi, there are four new anime titles scheduled to be available on the platform on Feb. 1. Two of these are Paprika and Tokyo Godfathers, both directed by the late Satoshi Kon. Paprika in particular is known for its surreal storytelling, and like many of Kon’s works, it uses this unusual narrative to deal with themes of identity. Based on a 1993 novel, the 2006 movie was Kon’s fourth and final film before he passed away in 2010. Winning and nominated for multiple awards, it’s one of the most acclaimed anime films of all time and boasts an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes. Also being added to the streaming service is the holiday-centered Tokyo Godfathers, a different kind of Christmas movie and the third film that Kon directed. Kon also wrote the film and designed the characters, with the more grounded storytelling being something of a departure from his other works.
The other two anime works coming to Tubi on Feb. 1 are Legend of the Millennium Dragon by Hirotsugu Kawasaki and The Sky Crawlers. The latter movie was directed by Momoru Oshii, known best for directing the original Ghost in the Shell movie and a collaborator of Kon’s. Tubi, Peacock, Pluto TV and Plex also host Millennium Actress, Kon’s second movie. Likewise, The Roku Channel has the creepy and subversive Paranoia Agent, a 2004 anime series that he wrote and directed. Tubi has increasingly added several major anime in the past year, with its free status making it a major competitor in the market compared to platforms with paid subscriptions. These shows include After War Gundam X, an entry in the Gundam franchise that, until recently, had never been available to stream for U.S. audiences.
