Cross River, World Bank begin revitalisation of 22 PHCs — News — The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News
The Cross River State government and the World Bank have commenced the revitalization of 22 primary healthcare centres through the Impact Project.
This follows the formal handover of Lot 1 of the World Bank-funded Immunization Plus and Malaria Progress by Accelerating Coverage and Transforming Services (IMPACT) Project sites to the contractor, Ryte Reazons Limited.
The handover marks the beginning of an ambitious effort to revitalize primary healthcare infrastructure across the state.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk, handed over the sites at the Esierebom and Anderson Primary Healthcare Centres in Wards 8 and 4 of Calabar South Local Government Area, among the 22 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) designated for upgrades under the project.
The health commissioner underscored the significance of the project within the broader framework of the state’s health care reform agenda.
“This handover extends beyond the contractor to include the communities and healthcare staff, who are vital in ensuring the project’s success,” Ayuk stated.
He emphasized the critical role of local government authorities in overseeing the contractor’s performance and providing regular progress updates to the IMPACT programme manager to maintain accountability and quality assurance.
The Project Coordinator, Dr. Paul Odey, highlighted Calabar South as a priority area for intervention and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to affordable and accessible healthcare.
Community leaders and stakeholders expressed their support for the contractor, pledging to collaborate to ensure the timely completion of the project.
They also expressed optimism that the upgrades would significantly improve healthcare access and outcomes across the affected communities.
Funded by the World Bank, the IMPACT Project is a collaborative initiative between the Cross River State Ministry of Health and the State Primary Health Care Development Agency.
The project aims to modernize PHCs by equipping them with state-of-the-art infrastructure, medical equipment, and improved services to meet the healthcare needs of urban and rural populations.
