10 Amazing Recent Movies That Were 90 Minutes Or Less

The old adage goes that brevity is the soul of wit, but at the same time, late film critic Roger Ebert famously said, “no good movie is long enough and no bad movie is short enough.”

Yet in an era where it feels like mainstream movies just keep getting longer, there’s something to be said for a film that gets in and out, telling its story within the extremely reasonable runtime of just 90 minutes.

While some might argue that a mere hour and a half just isn’t enough time to tell a compelling story without rushing through it, these filmmakers all categorically proved otherwise.

In addition to having note-perfect pacing, these terrific films all offered up whip-smart writing and outstanding performances, ensuring they made some serious impact while not eating up hours and hours of your day.

Sweeping 215-minute epics like The Brutalist certainly have their place, and all movies should be just as long they need to be, but sometimes a more modest, to-the-point piece of work can be a major breath of fresh air.

If you’re seeking out some short recent movies that’ll really stick with you, then look no further…

My Old Ass is a delightful and unexpectedly affecting coming-of-age dramedy in which 18-year-old Elliott (Maisy Stella) makes contact with her 38-year-old self (Aubrey Plaza) while tripping on mushrooms.

It’s a kooky concept but one which never undermines filmmaker Megan Park’s serious-minded intent.

Less the silly romp you might reasonably expect, this is an impressively well-wrought film that explores regret and the passage of time with uncommon poignance.

In her feature film debut, Maisy Stella gives a wonderfully empathetic performance as younger Elliott, while in a supporting role Aubrey Plaza brings enormous pathos to the troubled older version.

And better yet, despite the hefty themes Park’s film works through, she brings it home in a drum-tight 89 minutes, ensuring not a single frame is squandered.

If you’re in the market for a heartfelt and thought-provoking film that couldn’t be more respectful of your time, look no further.
