Celebrating the golden year of Portugal and India’s journey together- The Week

On January 26, 2025, the Indian ambassador’s residence in Lisbon was a picture of festivity and camaraderie as India and Portugal celebrated a pivotal milestone – 50 years of renewed diplomatic relations. A flag hoisting ceremony marked the beginning of the elaborate year-long celebration underscoring the deep historical, cultural, and economic relations shared by the two nations.

The event was attended by diplomats, dignitaries, enterprise leaders, and cultural ambassadors. President Droupadi Murmu is also expected to visit Portugal later this year to commemorate the celebrations, marking the first visit by an Indian President to the country in 27 years.

The economic relation between Portugal and India has flourished over the past years. Bilateral trade has witnessed a visible exponential boom, pushed by collaborative ventures in sectors such as technology, architecture, digital space, renewable electricity, agriculture, and even defence.

Both nations are committed to developing an environment conducive to investments and fostering innovation and entrepreneurship. The focus on financial collaboration is not only because of the bilateral profits, but also to address demanding situations around the globe and to boost sustainable development. “We hope to further strengthen these relations this year with the exchange of high-level visits and events related to art, culture, music, literature, and people-to-people contact between the two countries,” said Puneet Roy Kundal, India’s Ambassador to Portugal.

Nuno Sampaio, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, and the chief guest for the event, highlighted Portugal’s dedication to education and work immigration from India. “Students coming to Portugal for their studies and research will be well-supported to meet their needs. Portugal is also committed to efficiency in local recruitment and ensuring dignified working conditions for all those who choose Portugal as their destination,” he said.

Tourism was a focus area at the event. Efforts to enhance tourism have been going on, with projects showcasing the cultural history, scenic landscapes, and vibrant traditions of either country. The event focused on discussing cultural exchange events, joint galas, and tourism campaigns which will boost people-to-people connections, making tourism an important pillar of this diplomatic relationship. The Ambassador even spoke about several grand events hosted in India, like the Kumbh Mela which now has the potential to attract and boost tourism in the country.

Indian cinema has found a welcoming audience in Portugal. The influence of Indian cinema in the country is growing and the Ambassador has promised to screen Indian movies across major cities in Portugal, drawing international attention and further strengthening ties through arts.

The event included traditional dance performances, music and art from both India and Portugal. Exhibitions showcased Indo-Portuguese heritage, emphasising the centuries-old connections dating back to the era of Portuguese exploration in India.
