India offers Malawi export chances – The Times Group

By Pemphero Malimba:

India High Commissioner to Malawi Subbiah Gopalakhrishnan has indicated that Malawi could transform its fortunes if it increased the quantity of products it exports to India.

This came out during celebrations marking India’s 76th Republic Day and 60 years of diplomatic relations with Malawi.

The event took place in Lilongwe.

Gopalakhrishnan emphasised India’s substantial food demand due to its large population.

He noted that Malawi’s exports to India had increased 10fold in the past three to four years and expressed confidence in further growth potential.

The High Commissioner reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting Malawi’s health, education and other sectors while also praising Malawi as a learning partner, particularly regarding its democratic values in power transitions.

“I keep on telling my Malawian colleagues that you grow anything we consume. We are one of the largest populated countries in the world; so, we are looking for food and other things to feed our people. I, therefore, think we have a great scope in the future.

“It’s not just Malawi learning from India; it’s a mutual learning [experience] where India is also learning other aspects from Malawi. Over the past 75 years, particularly in healthcare and economic development, India has been a preferred destination for medical tourism and global capital investment for Malawi,” Gopalakhrishnan said.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Patricia Nangozo Kainga acknowledged India’s substantial support to Malawi across various sectors over six decades, particularly in capacity building through scholarships that are benefiting civil servants.

“India is helping us in different sectors and we are also benefiting, in terms of capacity building. You know that they offer scholarships and most of our people in the civil service have also benefitted from these scholarships. So, we thank the government of India for their commitment and support to the Republic of Malawi,” Kainga said.

While India-Malawi relations span over 140 years, formal diplomatic ties were established in 1964 following Malawi’s independence from Britain.

The celebration drew attendance from members of the diplomatic community, Indian residents in Malawi, development partners and government officials.
