Chanel bags are the ultimate symbol of luxury. Known worldwide for their flawless craftsmanship and timeless design, they’re a staple in high-end fashion. But because of their uniqueness, Chanel bags are also one of the most counterfeited products in the fashion world.
It can be tough to spot a fake, especially with how convincing the replicas have become. To help you tell if the Chanel bag you are eyeing is the real deal, here are a few key things to look for:
Premium leather
Chanel purses are generally crafted from either caviar or lambskin leather. Lambskin is soft and luxurious to the touch, while caviar leather, made from hammered calfskin, is a bit rougher and has a unique glossy finish. Give the bag a gentle touch to feel if it’s plush and high-quality. Counterfeit bags, on the other hand, are often made from cheap materials that don’t compare.
Authenticity Card
Chanel bags come with an authenticity card featuring a gold border, and the numbers on the card should match those on the bag. Take a close look at the font and texture of the card. Real cards have crisp, clear writing and a solid, high-quality feel.
Serial Numbers
Checking a Chanel bag’s serial number is one of the easiest ways to confirm its authenticity. Each genuine Chanel bag has a unique authenticity code that shows its manufacturing date. If the code looks outdated or off, there is a good chance the bag is a fake.
Interior
Fake bags often feature poor-quality interiors, so it is important to do your research before buying. Counterfeit bags usually use the wrong lining colours or fabrics. In a genuine Chanel bag, the word “Chanel” will always be written inside.
Quilting
Chanel’s signature quilted pattern is easy to recognize. Even on vintage bags, the quilting should still be symmetrical and aligned. If the quilted diamonds look flat, uneven, or too puffy, it is likely a sign of poor craftsmanship found in fake bags. On a real Chanel flap bag, the quilted rows will stay perfectly aligned, even when the bag is closed.
Hardware
You can also spot a fake Chanel bag by examining the hardware, especially the closure. Most modern bags feature the iconic CC clasp, but Chanel’s original 2.55 bag had a rectangular clasp without branding. Today’s 2.55 bags have elevated, rounder Cs, while vintage bags have flatter ones. If the twist lock feels stiff or does not operate smoothly, it is likely a replica. Also, make sure the two Cs on the clasp overlap perfectly.
