There have been numerous instances where actors have turned down a movie, only for it to go on and become a blockbuster hit. Sometimes, these actors don’t initially see the potential in a film, only to realize its impact once the audience falls in love with it. Today, we will talk about one such film. This movie was rejected by many big stars but eventually became iconic.

Despite turning down the film, actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan, and Shahid Kapoor would later watch it become a massive success. So much so, that the movie is still cherished and watched today with the same enthusiasm. The film is Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Rang De Basanti.

A Film That Defined A Generation

Rang De Basanti, a 2006 coming-of-age sociopolitical action-drama, was written and directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. The film had an intriguing plot, a brilliant background score and a talented ensemble cast, including Aamir Khan, Siddharth, Atul Kulkarni, Kunal Kapoor, Soha Ali Khan, and Waheeda Rehman.

Upon its release, the film broke all box office records, becoming the highest-grossing film in the country at the time. It even went on to win a National Film Award and remains one of the most beloved films in the cinema.

The Big Stars Who Rejected Rang De Basanti

According to several reports, Rang De Basanti originally had Shah Rukh Khan as the first choice for the role of Daljit AKA DJ. However, the actor turned down the film as he was already committed to shooting for Paheli. The makers then approached Hrithik Roshan for the role of Ajay Rathore, but he too declined the offer.

Abhishek Bachchan was also approached but rejected the film. Shahid Kapoor was considered for the role of Karan Singhania, but he too passed on the opportunity. Even Soha Ali Khan wasn’t initially the first choice for her role. Preity Zinta was the original choice for the part, but she too turned it down.

After several rejections, the makers cast Aamir Khan as Daljit, R. Madhavan for Ajay Rathore, Soha Ali Khan for Sonia, and Siddharth for Karan Singhania.

Made on a modest budget of Rs 28 crore, Rang De Basanti went on to gross Rs 96 crore worldwide, making it a massive hit both commercially and critically.
