Analysis of health data reveals one in every two individuals has a lifestyle disorder
A recent study has found that one in every two individuals has lifestyle disorders. The study, done as part of India’s 76th Republic Day by Redcliffe Labs, analysed health data from 2.8 million individuals across the country. Among respondents 52% were men and 48% were women.
There has been a significant shift in the disease pattern in the country, with a large population grappling with chronic health conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, lipid imbalances, renal disorders, fatty liver, arthritis, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer.
Rapid urbanisation, sedentary living, dietary changes, stress, digital addiction, and the easy availability of ultra-processed junk foods have contributed to lifestyle diseases, the study revealed.
Mayanka Lodha Seth, chief pathologist at Redcliffe Labs, said, the data indicated that non-communicable diseases were not limited to older adults. “We see these conditions affecting people across all age groups and genders. NCDs have grown from 9% to 20%, and the mortality rate due to preventable and curable NCDs has touched approximately 62%. This is a health crisis for the nation and only prevention is the key to curb the same.”
There is a need to adopt an active lifestyle, “switching back to nutritious food, and making a periodic health check mandatory to monitor our vitals,” Dr. Seth said, adding early detection helped to make informed decisions and reverse the risk of chronic health conditions. It is crucial to include preventive healthcare measures to address the rising burden, Dr. Seth added.
Aditya Kandoi, founder and chief executive officer of Redcliffe Labs emphasised that the lab was committed to giving India its right to quality diagnostics .
“With over 14.4 million children obese in India, which is the leading cause of NCDs, we need to take this seriously and take measures, starting today,” he said, adding: “Each of us has the power to make a difference, and the role of early diagnostics in managing and mitigating these conditions cannot be overstated.”
