ChatGPT-maker OpenAI CEO Sam Altman may visit India next week: Why this is important

Sam Altman, CEO of the Microsoft-backed artificial intelligence firm OpenAI, is scheduled to visit India next week, a report has said. This visit comes at a time for the ChatGPT-maker when it navigates legal hurdles in the country and faces competition from Chinese rivals.
Citing sources, news agency Reuters claimed that Altman is expected to arrive in New Delhi on February 5, with a possible meeting with government officials on the agenda. While the schedule is still tentative, the visit underscores the importance of the Indian market for OpenAI, which boasts the second-largest user base for the company’s AI chatbot, ChatGPT.

OpenAI’s legal hurdles in India

OpenAI’s presence in India has been met with legal challenges. A lawsuit alleging copyright infringement was filed last year by local news agency ANI, with several book publishers and digital media outlets subsequently joining the case.
OpenAI maintains that it operates within the bounds of fair use principles and contests the jurisdiction of Indian courts in this matter. This week, the company sought to block Indian media organisations from joining the copyright lawsuit.

OpenAI CEO came to India in 2023

This will be Altman’s first visit after 2023. Altman’s 2025 visit, his first since meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2023, will likely focus on navigating these challenges and reinforcing OpenAI’s commitment to the Indian market, the report noted.
The discussions may also touch upon the potential of AI to contribute to India’s growing tech ecosystem, it added.
OpenAI is also facing competition after the recent market disruption caused by the emergence of DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup whose DeepSeek AI Assistant powered by R1 model has surpassed ChatGPT in popularity on Apple’s App Store in the US.
