Experts seek Vizhinjam Port to identify its ‘Mother Industry’ to boost global trade

Identifying a “mother industry” for Vizhinjam Port is key to its success in international trade, said Prasad K Panicker, Chairman of Nayara Energy, during a session titled “Industrial Magnetism: Why Vizhinjam is Your Next Business Destination.”

Drawing parallels with ports like Singapore, Rotterdam, and Shanghai, he emphasized that every thriving port had a driving industry. “Since oil transportation is not viable for Vizhinjam, new energy sectors like battery, solar panels, or solid cargo could define its future,” he said. Determining this early would position Vizhinjam as a significant player in global maritime trade.

He also highlighted Vizhinjam’s natural advantages, such as its proximity to international shipping lines, deep draft, and connectivity. Stressing the need for a clear roadmap, he called for improved inland connectivity, investment-friendly policies, and modern infrastructure, including bunkering facilities, which are currently absent at the port. Fully automated systems and enhanced connectivity will address land limitations and attract more ships, he added.

Speaking on Vizhinjam’s potential, Sushama Sreekandath, AVT McCormick Managing Director, stressed the importance of a time-bound development plan. “Singapore aims to be the largest port system by 2040 with a clear vision. We need a similar strategy,” she said. She also noted that Vizhinjam’s location could reduce transit time by 7–10 days, offering a significant competitive edge. Sushama urged collaboration among the government, industry stakeholders, and the public to ensure robust road and rail connectivity for the smooth movement of goods.

VISIL CEO Shrikumar K Nair announced plans for tunnel rail connectivity to Vizhinjam by 2029, which could revolutionize regional freight movement. He highlighted the possibility of a dedicated port rail tunnel to enhance container transportation.
