GRA Commences Capacity Building on Implementation of AEO Program – Foroyaa Newspaper
By Mustapha Jallow
The Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA), with support from the World Customs Organization (WCO) through the HMRC-WCO-UNCTAD Trade Facilitation Programme, on Monday, 27 January 2025 commenced a five-day capacity-building, aimed at implementing the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) Program.
Held at a local hotel in Senegambia, the event which started yesterday on the 31st of January 2025, followed earlier virtual sessions conducted to review AEO draft documents and finalize a comprehensive AEO manual.
The WCO AEO program, according to the organizers, is a globally recognized initiative that certifies businesses meeting high standards of compliance, security, and reliability in international trade. Benefits for certified organizations include faster customs clearance, fewer inspections, and enhanced trade efficiency, aligning with global best practices to foster economic growth and transparency.
In his remarks, Yankuba Darboe, the Commissioner General (CG) of GRA highlighted the significance of the workshop and GRA’s commitment to aligning its operations with international standards.
“This initiative reflects our tireless efforts to enhance trade facilitation, boost economic development, and ensure The Gambia remains competitive in the global market,” he added.
Mr Alagie Mbye, Commissioner of Customs, reinforced this sentiment, noting GRA’s dedication to trade security and facilitation with the signing of a Declaration of Intent with the WCO in 2015 to implement the SAFE Framework of Standards.
“The AEO Scheme is a critical component of this framework, designed to secure and facilitate global trade,” he emphasized.
The discussions are being led by two renowned experts, namely, Madam Pelisa Matyumza, WCO Technical and Operational Advisor on AEO, and Madam Peninah Kirungi, WCO AEO–accredited expert from the Uganda Revenue Authority.
Madam Pelisa emphasized the transformative potential of the AEO program, stating the initiative will not only enhance economic prosperity but also promote transparency and efficiency in global trade processes.
As the workshop progresses, participants are expected to finalize a robust WCO AEO manual, laying the groundwork for the successful implementation of the program.
Meanwhile, such a milestone reflects GRA’s steadfast commitment to facilitating trade and driving economic growth in The Gambia through international collaboration and best practices.
