Gucci The Alchemist’s Garden expands with three new fragrances in Asia Pacific travel retail : Moodie Davitt Report
The Alchemist’s Garden fragrances are designed to be layered with other scents from the collection, offering endless personalisation
Coty Travel Retail has extended Gucci The Alchemist’s Garden range with three fragrances, now available at select duty-free locations in Asia Pacific. The scents will be introduced in travel retail across Europe and the Americas from 1 March.
The new fragrances – Vanilla Firenze, Fiori di Neroli and Osmanthus Nectar – join the range’s current bestseller, Tears from the Moon Eau de Parfum.
According to Coty, Gucci perfumers take inspiration from alchemy practised in Florence during the Italian renaissance.
Coty noted: “They create scents through a dynamic process inspired by the four alchemical stages of matter transformation, each linked to one of the four elements: substratum (earth), vaporum (air), liquidum (water) and ignis (fire).”
Each scent is sealed in a coloured bottle that pays homage to its transmutation process.
The supporting launch campaign, designed by Creative Director Sabato De Sarno, showcases the ingredients and processes behind each scent through tactile imagery.
The classical elements
The Substratum scents incorporate earthy ingredients such as resins, woods and dried leaves. These materials are calcinated, macerated, solvent-extracted and infused to release their full intensity.
The perfumes are housed in black bottles with detailed golden illustrations of animals and other symbolic motifs.
The Vaporum family scents feature pure ingredients and synthetic molecules, sublimated through gas extractions or recreated through biotechnology to reflect their aerial qualities. These light fragrances come in white bottles featuring flying creatures.
Liquidum scents are created through distillation, using water to transform floral essences into multi-layered perfumes. Each bottle carries a distinctive symbol from Gucci’s garden.
According to Coty, Ignis fragrances push the boundaries of alchemy, using the disruptive techniques to create daring scents. These perfumes are presented in red bottles with magical symbols and fantastical animals.
Creating the recipes
Gucci Vanilla Firenze Eau de Parfum is a floral woody amber scent that combines two key ingredients: Italian iris pallida concrete and three types of vanilla extracts.
Italian orris is harvested by carefully picking its rhizomes, which are then dried in artisanal caves to allow their earthy qualities to mature.
After being infused, the rhizomes are ground into powder and placed in an alembic, where a solvent extracts their raw depth, creating a custom iris pallida concrete.
Perfumer Véronique Nyberg explored the ingredient’s contrasts, blending it with vanilla infusion, vanilla absolute and vanilla essence. Myrrh resinoid is added for depth enhancement. The scent is symbolised by a steed, representing nobility and strength.
Gucci Fiori di Neroli Eau de Parfum celebrates the art of distillation through an exclusive collaboration with Liguria’s last neroli producer, a family business founded in 1856.
Fresh neroli flowers are gathered, weighed and heated in an alembic, where steam extracts their essence to create neroli essence. Perfumers Mathieu Nardin and Julie Massé used this to craft a fragrance that evokes the Mediterranean breeze.
According to Coty, the scents bridge alchemy with modern perfumery
Neroli notes are paired with petitgrain essential oil, and the fragrance is balanced with cedar extracts. The orange blossom bud on the fragrance bottle represents the revival of this Italian tradition.
Gucci Osmanthus Nectar Eau de Parfum captures the essence of the osmanthus flower, known for its apricot-like aroma.
Perfumer Natalie Lorson translated the fruitiness of osmanthus into scent through a method that captures its fragrant molecules as they bloom in nature.
This floral note is balanced with sandalwood essential oil, distilled to create a woody base with a touch of dry spice. The fragrance is symbolised by a hummingbird, representing creativity and imagination.
Perfumer Alberto Morillas created Gucci Tears from the Moon Eau de Parfum with a blend of Damascena rose petals and aldehydic white flowers.
Its heart features white peony and stephanotis, their freshness preserved through precise extraction techniques. The fragrance is lifted by lily of the valley accord. The bottle is adorned with a dragonfly, representing freedom and hope.
