A portion of the Maharani’s Science College for Women on Jhansi Lakshmi Bai Road collapsed when preparations were under way for its demolition to reconstruct a new building, trapping one worker in the process on Tuesday evening.

The building was not being used as the roof of the laboratory had collapsed in October 2022 following which the government cleared the project for demolition and reconstruction of the new structure.

Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy said that the work was going on since the last four to five days and during the process of preparation for demolition, the wall collapsed. He said 14 workers were engaged in clearing the laboratory of whom 13 escaped and rescue operation was on for the trapped worker. He has been identified as Saddam of Ghousia Nagar in the city.

Mr. Reddy said the focus is on search and rescue of the trapped worker and subsequently, they will fix responsibility after assessing if safety measures were in place or not during the demolition.

However, Chamaraja MLA Harish Gowda said the heritage committee had issued directions that the façade of the structure should be retained while permitting for renovation and reconstruction of other portions. However, engineers from the KHB and other experts had said that the building was dilapidated and lacked strength. The building was not in use since the earlier collapse, he said. Work order had been issued for the commencement of the reconstruction which was under way when the building collapsed. The contractor who was engaged for the task they were removing the window arches and about 20 of them had been removed when the walls caved in and collapsed.

During the 2022 collapse three laboratories – of chemistry, biotechnology, and botany departments – had been reduced to a rubble. Fortunately, there were no students then and the fragile structure has remained out of bounds for all since then.
