The Union Minister of Textiles, Giriraj Singh, inaugurated the Handloom Conclave and urged the handloom sector to change their ‘conventional mindset’ and target a premium niche market. Singh emphasised that the sector should aim at blending traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation and implementing focused marketing strategies.
The Textile Minister addressed the audience at the Ambedkar International Centre Janpath, New Delhi, and highlighted the need for the sector to become self-reliant (“Atmanirbhar”) by embracing innovative technologies and building a strong global brand image for handloom products.
Shedding light on the Ministry’s commitment to women empowerment, Singh noted that women hold key positions within the Ministry and constitute a significant portion of the handloom workforce. He launched the Handloom Weavers E-Pehchaan portal and an online module for Handloom Awards during the event.
Minister Singh stressed the importance of raising awareness about the sustainable and eco-friendly nature of handloom products, including natural dyes, organic fibres, and unique designs, to capitalize on the growing e-commerce market, projected to reach US $ 325 billion by 2030. He also called upon the organised sector to develop models that provide sustainable livelihoods for handloom weavers, including social security and fair remuneration. The Ministry will introduce an award for companies that successfully implement such models, ensuring at least 300 days of employment for weavers annually.
Minister of State for External Affairs & Textiles, Pabitra Margherita, emphasised the cultural significance of handloom products and the need to rejuvenate the sector to attract younger generations. He highlighted the “Conclave-Manthan” as a platform for dialogue between the Ministry and stakeholders to address concerns like marketing access and youth attrition from the sector, emphasising the need to integrate modern education with traditional knowledge.
