Indiana football starting cornerback Jamier Johnson, 2 others leave program

Indiana football released its first roster for the 2025 season Wednesday, and it came with four previously undisclosed moves.

Rising redshirt senior cornerback Jamier Johnson is no longer with the program, an Indiana Athletics spokesperson confirmed to the Indiana Daily Student. Rising redshirt freshman cornerback Josh Philostin is entering the transfer portal, while redshirt senior offensive lineman Cooper Jones did not return to the team, the spokesperson said.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Tyler Cherry, who will miss the entire 2025 season due to a knee injury suffered in practice before Indiana’s College Football Playoff First Round loss to the University of Notre Dame on Dec. 20, will serve as a student-coach on the team’s roster, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Cherry will be able to return to the team in 2026, and his exclusion from the roster opens another spot, which benefits the Hoosiers this coming season.

Johnson is perhaps the most high-profile departure. The 5-foot-11, 181-pounder played 12 games and made 10 starts this past season, notching 35 tackles and one interception.

Indiana returns All-American junior cornerback D’Angelo Ponds, but the spot opposite Ponds — previously held by Johnson — is now open. Redshirt senior Jamari Sharpe played extensively in place of Johnson against Notre Dame, making four tackles and a half-tackle-for-loss while recovering a fumble.

Philostin, a 3-star recruit according to 247Sports, was the Hoosiers’ second highest-rated signee in the 2024 class — behind Cherry. Philostin missed his entire freshman season due to a knee injury suffered in the team’s first intrasquad scrimmage Aug. 10.

Jones played in 11 of the Hoosiers’ 13 games in 2024, and he played in all 12 games on special teams in 2023.

The Hoosiers haven’t announced their spring practice scheduled, but head coach Curt Cignetti will hold his second consecutive spring football game at noon April 19 inside Memorial Stadium in Bloomington.
