New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Economic Survey 2024-25 in Parliament on Friday, highlighting advancements in education. The survey underscores education and human capital development as key pillars of growth, with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 playing a pivotal role.

India’s school education system now caters to 24.8 crore students across 14.72 lakh schools, supported by 98 lakh teachers (UDISE+ 2023-24). Government schools make up 69% of total schools, enrolling 50% of students and employing 51 % of teachers. Private institutions account for 22.5%, accommodating 32.6% of students and employing 38% of teachers

The survey notes that the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in primary education stands at 93%, while secondary and higher secondary levels are at 77.4% and 56.2%, respectively. Efforts are ongoing to achieve 100% GER by 2030 under NEP 2020.

Dropout rates have steadily declined, recorded at 1.9% at the primary level, 5.2% at the upper primary level, and 14.1% at the secondary level. School infrastructure has also improved, with 57.2% of schools now having computers. Similarly, the percentage of schools having internet facility increased from 22.3 % in 2019-20 to 53.9 % in 2023-2024.

India’s higher education sector remains one of the largest globally, with enrolment rising from 3.42 crore in 2014-15 to 4.33 crore in 2021-22, marking a 26.5% increase. The GER for the 18–23 age group improved from 23.7% to 28.4% in the same period.

To achieve the government’s goal of increasing GER to 50 per cent by 2035 in higher education, there is a need to double the educational network and infrastructure.

The Survey highlights that over the years, there has been a significant transformation in higher education ecosystem. Total Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) increased by 13.8 per cent from 51,534 in 2014- 15 to 58,643 in 2022-23, the Survey added.
