New Hannibal Lecter Movie Reportedly in the Works at Universal

Hannibal Lecter, pop culture’s most popular cannibal, may soon be heading back to the big screen. It’s been reported that a new feature film featuring the iconic character is in the works,

According to film industry insider Daniel Richtman, Universal is “developing a new Hannibal Lecter movie.” However, it’s currently unclear if Anthony Hopkins will return to reprise the role. No additional details about the project were shared, so it’s also not known if the film is intended to be a reboot or a new sequel to the previous Universal films about the character. No filmmakers or cast members were noted to be attached to the project as of this time, and Universal has not yet offered an official comment.

The director of a recent horror hit will next reimagine Josh Hartnett’s sci-fi horror classic.

The Hannibal Lecter character was created by author Thomas Harris, and he first appeared in the 1981 novel Red Dragon. The character was featured more prominently in the follow-up book, 1988’s The Silence of the Lambs. Anthony Hopkins famously played Hannibal in the 1991 film adaptation of The Silence of the Lambs, a role that won him an Academy Award for Best Actor. The actor’s unforgettable performance also forever established Hannibal as one of the most well-known fictional movie killers, joining Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Chucky, and Leatherface.

Hopkins returned as Hannibal in Ridley Scott’s 2001 movie Hannibal, though Julianne Moore took over the role of Clarice Starling from Jodie Foster. Hopkins would play the role once again the following year in 2002’s Red Dragon, which was a prequel to the previous two films. In 2007, Gaspard Ulliel played a younger version of Hannibal in the prequel film Hannibal Rising. This film served as a prequel to the Hopkins-led movies.

Dave Franco and Alison Brie’s new body horror film is a Sundance breakout hit with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score.

“So we talked, but I knew how to play the part,” Hopkins told People last year about taking on the role and how it felt natural for him. “And I don’t know. I do have an instinct about these roles. I could understand Lecter. I could understand the mystery of the man, the loner, the isolated voice in the dark, the man at the top of the stairs who’s not really there.”

Hannibal Lecter Is Getting Another Movie

In 1986, Michael Mann’s Manhunter was released. Inspired by Red Dragon, that film featured Succession star Brian Cox as Hannibal and was not connected to Hopkins’ movies. Meanwhile, Mads Mikkelsen would find his own success playing the cannibal as the star of the three-season NBC series Hannibal. Rumors have persisted for years that the show may be given a revival, but this has yet to materialize. In 2012, CBS also took a crack at the franchise with Clarice, a TV series starring Rebecca Breeds as Clarice Starling; it was canceled after one season.
