PM Modi shares tips for weight loss |
Obesity is a silent killer and is the root cause of several diseases, including some fatal ones. Health agencies and experts have been relentlessly creating awareness around obesity and sharing tips on how to reduce it.
Recently, Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar shared a video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi sharing tips on controlling weight and preventing obesity.
The video has been shared by the actor on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and has garnered huge attention. The video is a part of PM Modi’s address to the gathering at the 38th National Games in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
“How true!! I’ve been saying this for years now…love it that the PM himself has put it so aptly. Health hai toh sab kuchh hai. Obesity se fight karne ke sabse bade hathiyaar
1. Enough sleep
2. Fresh air and Sunlight
3. No processed food, less oil. Trust the good old desi ghee
And most importantly…
Move, move, move. Kuchh bhi type ka workout karo par karo toh sahi. Regular exercise will change your life. Trust me on this and get moving. Jai Mahakal,” the actor has captioned the video of the PM speaking.
“Obesity is increasing rapidly in our country”
PM Modi highlighted the growing epidemic of obesity. “All of you understand the importance of fitness. That is why today I want to talk about a challenge which is very important. Statistics say that the problem of obesity is increasing rapidly in our country. Every age group of the country, and even the youth, are being badly affected by it. And this is also a matter of concern because obesity increases the risk of diseases like diabetes, heart disease. I am satisfied that today the country is becoming aware of fitness and healthy lifestyle through the Fit India Movement. These national games also teach us how important physical activity, discipline and balanced life are. Today I would like to tell the countrymen to definitely focus on two things. These two things are related to exercise and diet. Every day, take out some time and do exercise. From walking to working out, do whatever is possible. Secondly, focus on your diet. Your focus should be on balanced intake and the food should be nutritious,” he said.
“Cut down oil consumption by 10%”
“Every age group of the country, and even the youth, are being badly affected by it. And this is also a matter of concern because obesity increases the risk of diseases like diabetes and heart disease,” the PM said, highlighting the ill effect of oil on health.
“Reduce unhealthy fat and oil in your food. Now in our normal homes, ration comes at the beginning of the month. Till now, if you used to bring home two liters of cooking oil every month, then reduce it by at least 10 percent. Reduce the amount of oil we use every day by 10 percent. We will have to find some ways to avoid obesity. Taking such small steps can bring a big change in your health. And this is what our elders used to do. They used to eat fresh food, natural things, and balanced meals. Only a healthy body can create a healthy mind and a healthy nation. I will also ask the state governments, schools, offices and community leaders to spread awareness about this, all of you have a lot of practical experience. I want you to continuously spread the information about correct nutrition to the people. Come, let us all together create a ‘Fit India’, with this call,” he addressed the gathering at the opening ceremony of 38th National Games in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
Oils play a crucial role in our diet, providing essential fatty acids and aiding in nutrient absorption. However, the type and quantity of oil consumed significantly impacts health. Healthy oils, such as olive, avocado, and flaxseed oil, are rich in unsaturated fats and antioxidants, promoting heart health, reducing inflammation, and improving brain function.
Excessive intake of unhealthy oils, particularly those high in trans fats and saturated fats like palm oil and hydrogenated vegetable oils, can lead to serious health issues. These oils contribute to obesity, high cholesterol, and an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases by clogging arteries and raising bad cholesterol (LDL) levels while reducing good cholesterol (HDL).
The method of cooking also affects oil’s health impact. Repeatedly heating oils at high temperatures produces harmful compounds that may increase the risk of chronic diseases, including cancer. Moderation and variety in oil consumption are key. Opting for cold-pressed, minimally processed oils and balancing them with a diet rich in whole foods can support overall well-being.
The PM encourages people to eat ghee, a staple in Indian households. Ghee, a clarified form of butter, offers several health benefits when consumed in moderation. It’s rich in healthy fats, particularly butyrate, which supports gut health by promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria and reducing inflammation. Ghee is also a source of fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K, crucial for immune function and skin health. Its high smoke point makes it ideal for cooking at high temperatures without producing harmful compounds. PM Modi’s message is a reminder to embrace the tradition of including foods that have been in practice since time immemorial.
PM suggests getting quality sleep and proper sunlight
Poor sleep significantly contributes to obesity. When sleep is compromised, the regulatory balance of hormones is disrupted. Hunger and the urge for highly calorie-rich food items increase due to poor sleep, which ultimately results in obesity. Poor sleep also affects metabolic and insulin activities, thereby leading to obesity risk. Sunlight exposure helps improve the circadian rhythm, ensuring good sleep quality. Sunlight exposure also improves serotonin levels in the body, which can aid in controlling hunger and mood disorders, thus helping in weight control indirectly. Moreover, sunlight promotes the production of vitamin D, which may also affect fat storage and metabolism, providing additional benefits in preventing obesity. Both proper sleep and sunlight can support healthier weight regulation.
“This is absolutely correct”
“What the Prime Minister said is absolutely correct. Obesity can lead to multiple health issues, including compromised circulation, breathing difficulties, weak digestion, and loss of energy. It also affects our mental focus, creativity, and overall well-being,” fitness coach Mickey Mehta told IANS.
“If India is to lead the world, we must first tackle the obesity epidemic. Our children are growing obese even in school, primarily due to unhealthy, processed foods,” he added.
