What are we discussing?
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has published a draft of the Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025. These rules operationalise India’s Data Protection Law and put in place a range of requirements for any company that processes personal data.

These include obtaining verifiable parental consent before processing the data of anyone under the age of 18, reporting personal data breaches to affected individuals and the Data Protection Board, and providing the Board with a list of measures the company will implement to mitigate the risks posed by the breach within a period of 72 hours. The rules also outline the requirements a company needs to qualify to become a consent manager and the obligations of consent managers.
MediaNama’s event concerns surrounding the provisions of the rules, both from the tech industry and the civil society to see whether these provisions adequately balance the need to protect people’s personal data while ensuring ease of compliance.
This discussion is being organised with support from Meta, Google, Snapchat, and Walmart and in partnership with CUTS, the Centre for Communication Governance at NLU Delhi, the Centre For Internet and Society, and the Internet Freedom Foundation.
