Antilles School to host basketball, softball tournaments this weekend
Antilles School will play host to a pair of St. Thomas-St. John Interscholastic Athletic Association-sanctioned tournaments this weekend.
The tournaments — for elementary school softball teams, and for high school varsity boys and girls basketball teams — both begin today and run through Saturday at the St. Thomas private school.
The Antilles basketball tournament will involve boys teams from Antilles School, Charlotte Amalie High School, Ivanna Eudora Kean High School, and Virgin Islands Montessori School and International Academy.
The girls side of the tournament will have two teams from Charlotte Amalie High (the Lady Hawks’ varsity and junior varsity squads), as well as the varsity teams from Antilles School and Ivanna Eudora Kean High.
All games will be played at Antilles School’s Mark C. Marin Center, with tipoff for today’s opening game at 4 p.m. Saturday’s play will begin at 9 a.m., with the girls championship game at approximately 7 p.m. and the boys championship game at 8:30 p.m.
The Antilles softball tournament will involve elementary softball teams from Antilles School, Jane E. Tuitt Elementary School, Joseph Gomez Elementary School and Ulla F. Muller Elementary School, and St. John’s Julius E. Sprauve School.
All games in the double-elimination tournament will be played on Antilles School’s Fishman Family Field, with today’s games beginning at 3:30 p.m. and Saturday’s games at 9 a.m.
WEDNESDAY’S RESULTS Varsity Boys Basketball
Ivanna Eudora Kean High School 66, Virgin Islands Montessori School and International Academy 22: The Devil Rays used a balanced scoring effort and tough defense to rout the short-handed Volts in their St. Thomas-St. John IAA league game.
Ivanna Eudora Kean High (1-0) saw 12 of its 13 players score in Wednesday’s league opener, led by 10 first-half points by Chainye Toussaint.
Mason Gardner had nine points in the first half as the Devil Rays built a 43-10 lead at the break, and Ajai Larcheveaux hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored eight points in the second half to put the win away.
Gabriel King scored eight points and Morgan Richardson added six points for Virgin Islands Montessori (0-1), which dressed just five players.
Ivanna Eudora Kean High School 41, Antilles School 8: The Lady Devil Rays shut out the Lady Hurricanes in the first half in winning their St. Thomas-St. John IAA league opener.
Rhea Hill scored 14 of her game-high 16 points in the second half (12 in the third quarter alone) to lead Ivanna Eudora Kean High (1-0), with Je’Anique Joseph adding 14 points.
Joseph scored 10 points in the first half (eight in the first quarter) as the Lady Rays blanked Antilles School (0-2) in racing to an 18-0 lead at the halftime break.
Eliana Walter led the Lady Hurricanes with six points, with Charlotte Nairns adding two points.
