World Bank officials visit Sundarbans for embankment project | Kolkata News

Kolkata: Bengal govt is embarking on a Rs 4,100-crore project to address the issue of erosion in the Sundarbans. While World Bank (WB) would bear 70% of the cost, state govt will fund the remaining Rs 1,230 crore.
State irrigation minister Manas Bhunia, along with World Bank officials and other technical experts, visited Gosaba this week for the work. The project, ‘Sustainable Harmonising Ocean Resources & Economy’, is likely to be completed in 2029-30.
This “will strengthen vulnerable embankments across the islands,” Bhunia said, adding that WB would release the funds once the finance ministry cleared it.
Bhunia said CM Mamata Banerjee was concerned about hazards in the area, and this project would address the issue of increased salinity faced by villagers of 39 islands. The project will be implemented in the lower delta.
Bhunia said Bengal govt was also in talks with ADB for aid so that the project can be carried out in the upper delta. Technical experts from The Netherlands are in Sundarbans to conduct a preliminary study.
