India’s Budget 2025 Focuses on IIT Expansion, AI, and Education in Local Languages

NEW DELHI, India — Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled the Union Budget 2025 on Thursday, emphasizing significant investments in higher education, artificial intelligence (AI), and the promotion of Indian languages. The budget includes plans to expand infrastructure at Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), increase medical college seats, and establish centers of excellence in AI.

The number of students enrolled in 23 IITs has doubled over the past decade, prompting the government to allocate funds for additional infrastructure at five newer IITs established after 2014. These upgrades will accommodate 6,500 more students. IIT Patna is also slated for expansion as part of the initiative.

In the medical sector, the government plans to add 10,000 seats in medical colleges next year, with a goal of creating 75,000 seats over the next five years. “This expansion will address the growing demand for skilled healthcare professionals,” Sitharaman said during her budget speech.

The budget also includes the establishment of 50,000 Atal Tinkering Labs across the country over the next five years, aimed at fostering innovation among students. Additionally, all government secondary schools will receive broadband connectivity to bridge the digital divide.

To promote education in rural and remote regions, the government will launch the Bhartiya Bhasha Pustak Scheme, which encourages learning in Indian languages. Five centers of excellence with global expertise will also be established, including three dedicated to AI in education.

Sitharaman highlighted the Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 programs, which aim to benefit over 8 crore children, 20 lakh adolescent girls, and pregnant women. “These initiatives will ensure holistic development and nutrition for our future generations,” she said.

The budget also introduced measures to support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). “The investment and turnover limits for MSME classification will be enhanced to 2.5 and 2 times, respectively,” Sitharaman announced. “This will empower them to grow and create employment opportunities for our youth.”

This marks Sitharaman’s eighth consecutive budget presentation, placing her among India’s longest-serving finance ministers. The late Morarji Desai holds the record for the most budget speeches at ten, though not consecutively, while former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has presented nine budgets.
