Kraven the Hunter Flops at Box Office, Becomes Sony’s Worst Marvel Film
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Sony‘s latest Marvel film, Kraven the Hunter, has become the studio’s biggest box office disappointment, failing to cross the $60 million mark globally. The film, which cost between $110-130 million to produce, marks the lowest-grossing entry in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) and one of the poorest-performing comic book movies in recent history.
Released on December 13, 2024, Kraven the Hunter grossed just $24.8 million domestically and $34.9 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $59 million. The film’s $26 million global opening was a record low for the SSU, signaling its lack of staying power against competitors like Wicked, Gladiator II, and Moana 2.
Despite a star-studded cast including Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the titular role, Ariana DeBose as Calypso Ezili, and Fred Hechinger as Dmitri Kravinoff, the film failed to resonate with audiences or critics. Taylor-Johnson’s portrayal of the Spider-Man villain, while praised for its intensity, couldn’t salvage the film’s weak narrative and lack of connection to the broader Marvel universe.
The SSU, which focuses on Spider-Man villains without featuring the web-slinger himself, has struggled to maintain momentum. While the Venom trilogy has been a financial success—grossing over $1.8 billion worldwide—other entries like Morbius, Madame Web, and now Kraven the Hunter have underperformed. Madame Web barely broke even with a $100 million gross against its $80 million budget, while Kraven the Hunter failed to recoup its production costs.
Critics have been harsh on the SSU, with none of its films earning a ‘fresh’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Kraven the Hunter, despite being the first R-rated entry in the franchise, was criticized for its disjointed storytelling and lack of meaningful ties to Spider-Man. ‘The point of most of these characters is their relationship with Spider-Man more than anything else,’ one reviewer noted.
Sony’s decision to release three SSU films in 2024—Madame Web, Venom: The Last Dance, and Kraven the Hunter—was seen as a bold move, but only Venom: The Last Dance succeeded, grossing $479 million against a $110-120 million budget. The future of the SSU now appears uncertain, with no new projects announced following Kraven the Hunter‘s poor performance.
Despite its box office failure, Kraven the Hunter is expected to find a second life on streaming platforms and physical media. The film is currently available on digital platforms and remains in limited theatrical release.
