At just 12 years old, Teddy Boskoff, a sixth grader at Cold Spring Harbor’s West Side School, is already having a big impact. Using his musical talents and a sense of compassion, Teddy is helping those affected by the devastating wildfires in California. Together with his brother Spencer, they have raised over $2,500 to support victims of the recent natural disasters — on the West Coast.
Teddy’s journey to helping wildfire victims began with a simple idea —use his guitar-playing skills to make a difference. Inspired by the images of destruction and stories of displaced families in the Los Angeles area, he wanted to do something tangible. So, he decided to play music for donations in his hometown of Cold Spring Harbor.
Originally inspired by their parents, who drove into Manhattan to donate boxes of clothes, blankets and pillows for the victims, Teddy decided to take matters into his own hands by playing guitar for donations outside a New York City restaurant. With his brother Spencer’s support, and a andmade creative sign, they raised more than $400 in just two and a half hours.
Feeling motivated, the students then selected two additional locations in the city and played outside for pedestrians throughout the afternoon.
Their initiative quickly garnered attention, with people passing by. The siblings’ sense of teamwork and drive made their efforts more than just a fundraiser; it became a powerful display of compassion and unity.
The Boskoff brothers’ effort quickly turned into a heartwarming success. With donations pouring in from local supporters and people passing by, they raised over $2,500 for the California wildfire victims in just a short amount of time. Teddy’s guitar music became a beacon of hope, bringing people together for a shared cause while raising awareness about the urgent need for support.
“We just wanted to help people who lost everything,” Teddy shared. He explained, “I thought if I could play music and people would donate, we could raise some money to make a difference.”
The funds raised by Teddy and Spencer went to the Los Angeles Fire Department and the Los Angeles Dream Center, a resource center for California residents seeking shelter and assistance. The money will go toward aiding families who have been displaced by the wildfires, helping them with basic needs such as food, shelter and emergency relief. Their efforts show that even small actions can make a big difference, especially when fueled by genuine care and a desire to help those in need.
Teddy’s efforts also highlight the power of young people to make a positive change in the world. His willingness to use his talents for a good cause is inspiring not only to his peers but to adults as well. “I’m really proud of Teddy and Spencer for what they’ve done,” said one of their teachers at West Side School. “It’s amazing to see young students taking initiative and showing that they care about others,” she said.
While this particular fundraiser may have started as a small project, the Boskoff brothers’ success has proven that even young people can play an important role in making a real difference. Teddy’s passion for music and his commitment to helping others have set an example for the entire Cold Spring Harbor community.
Teddy and Spencer continued their kindness by playing the guitar locally at the Starbucks location in Huntington in hopes of raising additional funds.
As Teddy continues to grow both as a musician and as a compassionate individual, it’s clear that his journey has only just begun. With the support of his family and community, there’s no telling how much more he can accomplish in the future, one guitar chord at a time.
