Auto sales report utility vehicles drive record January passenger vehicle dispatch SIAM

Passenger vehicle dispatches from factories to dealerships rose by 1.6% year-on-year in January 2025, reaching a record 3,99,386 units, supported by strong utility vehicle demand, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). This marked the highest-ever January sales for passenger vehicles.

In comparison, total passenger vehicle dispatches stood at 3,93,074 units in January 2024. Utility vehicle dispatches saw a significant rise of 6% year-on-year to 2,12,995 units, up from 2,00,917 units in the previous year. However, passenger car wholesales remained flat at 1,27,065 units, and van dispatches declined by 6.4% to 11,250 units.

Two-wheelers and three-wheelers register growth

Two-wheeler dispatches grew by 2.1% year-on-year to 15,26,218 units in January 2025, compared to 14,95,183 units in January 2024. Scooters posted a robust growth of 12.4%, with 5,48,201 units dispatched. Meanwhile, motorcycle sales declined by 3.1% to 9,36,145 units, and moped sales dipped slightly to 41,872 units.

The three-wheeler segment saw a 7.7% year-on-year rise, with 58,167 units dispatched in January, up from 53,991 units in the same month last year.

Key automaker performances

• Maruti Suzuki India: Increased dispatches by 4% to 1,73,599 units.
• Hyundai Motor India: Witnessed a 5% decline, with 54,003 units dispatched.
• Mahindra & Mahindra: Saw a notable rise in dispatches, reaching 50,659 units, compared to 43,068 units in January 2024.

SIAM’s outlook

Rajesh Menon, Director General of SIAM, highlighted the positive impact of recent economic policies, stating, “Passenger Vehicles posted its highest-ever January sales in 2025 of 3.99 lakh units, with a growth of 1.6% compared to January 2024. The Union Budget announcements prioritizing long-term economic growth, personal income tax changes, and RBI’s interest rate reductions will boost consumer confidence and drive demand in the auto industry.”

These figures indicate a promising start to 2025 for the Indian automotive market, with utility vehicles playing a pivotal role in driving growth.
