Minister Patricia De Lille Highlights Successful Collaboration Between South Africa’s Tourism Department And Home Affairs To Improve Visa Process
Major Improvements in South Africa’s Visa Process
South Africa’s Tourism Minister, Patricia de Lille, has expressed her excitement over the notable progress made by the Department of Home Affairs regarding the visa regime.
She highlighted the significant changes in the process that have made it easier for travelers, especially from key markets like China and India.
A Strong Collaboration for Progress
Minister de Lille emphasized how successful collaboration between the Presidency’s Operation Vulindlela, the State Security Agency, and the Department of Home Affairs has driven these changes.
A major achievement in this effort is the introduction of the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme.
This initiative is set to streamline the visa application process for travelers and tour operators from China and India, alongside new measures such as the Electronic Travel Authorisation and Digital Nomad Visas.
“The improvements we’ve seen this past year have been remarkable,” said de Lille.
“This work is really helping to make the process smoother and more accessible, particularly for travelers coming from key international markets.”
A Boost for South Africa’s Tourism Sector
The tourism sector continues to play a pivotal role in South Africa’s economic recovery.
Minister de Lille pointed out the country’s steady progress in tourism, with nearly 9 million arrivals recorded in 2024, marking a 5.1% increase from the previous year.
She acknowledged the tireless work of the tourism sector in addressing visa challenges in South Africa, China, and India.
The latest advancements by the Department of Home Affairs are seen as critical to removing barriers to travel and boosting tourism growth.
“The Department of Tourism will leverage these new visa options, such as the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme and Digital Nomad Visas, to attract more tourists from countries like India and China,” de Lille added. “These improvements will help achieve South Africa’s economic growth goals and create more jobs.”
Phase One of Trusted Tour Operator Scheme Launched
On Wednesday, the Department of Home Affairs rolled out the first phase of the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme.
This phase is designed to enhance the visa application process for travelers and tour operators from India and China—two of South Africa’s largest tourist markets.
A seamless visa process is vital for increasing visitor numbers, and the government is committed to continuing its work with Home Affairs to further streamline the system.
Minister de Lille and Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber were on hand to welcome the first group of 65 tour operators from South Africa, China, and India who were successfully accepted into the scheme. These operators are now able to submit visa applications for both individual and group travelers through a fully digital and much more efficient system.
Positive Reception from the Tourism Industry
The improvements in the visa system have been warmly received by the tourism sector in all three countries.
Minister de Lille shared that there is a great deal of excitement about the potential of these changes to boost tourism, particularly from China and India.
“We are eager to see the results of these improvements over the next few months,” de Lille concluded.
“We’re confident that these changes will lead to an increase in arrivals from these key markets, benefiting the country’s tourism and overall economy.”
