Tulane University has just announced that it plans to build an enclosed practice facility for the Green Wave football team, among other sports.

After years of using the Caesars Superdome for occasional indoor practices and even more talk surrounding where this facility would be, director of athletics David Harris announced that plans are officially underway for building the facility behind Greer Field at Turchin Stadium, where a section of the Claiborne Avenue Parking Lot is now.

This marks a huge stepping point for Tulane in committing to its athletic programs, particularly football, after its recent success over the past few years. The fact that the facility will take over the parking lot, as opposed to the previously rumored Brown Field, is also great news for Tulane students.

To become a “real” football program, an indoor football facility is a must, especially in a city like New Orleans, with unpredictable weather and rain. Harris and Tulane Athletics are ensuring that this new facility is built to last: “the roof and sides covering the field are inflatable and can be disassembled and removed for hurricanes and other purposes.”

The facility, which is supposed to be 60 feet high with a field inside measuring around 70 yards, will be perfect for the team to practice different in-game situations, including kicking and punting.

The facility is certainly appealing for recruiting. In the modern college football world, full of name, image and likeness as well as transfer portal talk, a university showing commitment to its program by building what Harris described as a “state-of-the-art, all-season venue” definitely stands out.

After a lackluster ending to what was a great first season for head coach Jon Sumrall and company, this new facility will hopefully keep the tide turning in the Green Wave’s favor.
