Seacoast Science Center teams with OGL to boost marine mammal research

RYE — The Ocean Genome Legacy Center of Northeastern University and the Seacoast Science Center Marine Mammal Rescue team have announced a new partnership aimed at enhancing our understanding of the biology of marine mammals.

The Ocean Genome Legacy Center, a nonprofit marine research laboratory and biological specimen repository, is dedicated to exploring and preserving the wealth of information contained in the DNA of marine organisms and training the next generation of marine scientists.

Seacoast Science Center, a nonprofit organization located in Odiorne Point State Park in Rye, focuses on marine science education and operates a 24/7 Marine Mammal Rescue program. The Marine Mammal Rescue team monitors and responds to marine mammals that haul out and become stranded on shore due to sickness, injury, and other causes. To learn more about environmental and human impacts on marine mammal health, the team collects data on stranded animals and takes samples from those who are deceased.

Through this partnership, samples collected by the Marine Mammal Rescue team will be submitted to the Ocean Genome Legacy Center repository, becoming accessible to researchers worldwide. This collaboration aims to promote the health of marine creatures and advance conservation efforts.

Despite being in its early stages, the partnership has already collected samples and data from a variety of marine mammal species, including harbor seals, humpback whales, hooded seals, common dolphins, and harp seals.
