“The garment industry is actively and extensively embracing sustainable practices and waste management through recycling,” said the AEPC’s chairman Sudhir Sekhri, the Press Trust of India reported. “We are far ahead of many of the developed countries in this regard.”

With activities ranging from creating vegan leather from natural materials and creating yarn from recycled fibres to upcycling old sarees and recycling footwear, many of India’s fashion and textiles brands are focusing on increasing sustainability in their operations. Indian consumers are also increasingly looking to support labels with an eco-responsible ethos as popular knowledge on sustainability and the environment increases, fuelled by an uptick in internet use across the country.

The AEPC also recently took part in Indian textile value chain trade show Bharat Tex 2025, the organisation announced on Facebook. The AEPC took the occasion to share that close to 80% of garment manufacturer exporters are micro, small, and medium enterprises and that almost 80% of its workforce comprises women. Bharat Tex gathered together textile and garment businesses from across India to facilitate collaborations between upstream and downstream industries at the Bharat Mandapam in Mew Delhi.
