32 Sports sends flag football teams to Junior Olympics – NBC Connecticut
Flag football is providing new opportunities for kids in the Hartford area. 32 Sports runs a free flag football league in Hartford and a few of their teams qualified for the Junior Olympics. The 6U boys placed third, while the 7U and 13U came in second place.
“Feels great,” said Junior Olympian Jason Johnson. “It makes us feel like we are the best of the best.”
“Winning… getting picks,” added Junior Olympian Job Chisholm, while describing what he loves about the game.
“Football in general is just amazing,” said Junior Olympian Daveon Tenn.
“Honestly, I didn’t really believe in flag, but becoming a part of the 32 community, it’s been amazing,” said Destiany Hunter, a team mom and sisterhood coordinator. “We watched our kids travel to places we never even traveled as kids.”
It’s not just the boys — 32 Sports has also seen big progress for the girls, too. Just last year, one of their athletes, Hanna Solis, received the first scholarship to college in Connecticut for girls flag football. Since then, a few others have been offered by colleges. It’s a sign of how much the game has grown and the wealth of new opportunities that the sport presents.
“It feels really good because I recently got my first offer for college and I just hope that other girls get to show out their skills and get the same thing that I did,” said Windsor’s Syniah Harding.
“It’s so fun being able to come out and see other people just as passionate as I am,” said Manchester’s Iyanna Sheets. “Playing in the league is so much fun.”
“The sport has really grown big,” added flag football coach Derrick Sheets. “It’s just awesome how it has grown so fast.”
32 Sports was founded by former NFL running back Matt Lawrence and his brother James Lawrence. The Bloomfield natives want to give back and help kids in Connecticut achieve their dreams.
“Success, success, success,” said James Lawrence. “We love the game of football. Flag football is just the means to reach them, to help them reach their highest potential. The goal is to teach them leadership skills, teach them how to be better people.”
