36th Drive-In Movies opens by Club 9 and The Roxy

Beringen (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The 36th Drive-In Movies opens today in Koersel, Beringen. Club 9 and The Roxy Theatre have hosted the annual event since 1989 with 7 films, classic cars.

The 36th Drive-In Movies opens today, Aug 25, 2025, in Koersel, part of Beringen, in the province of Limburg, Belgium, and brings back a tradition that started in 1989. The event is a culmination of the partnership of Club 9 and The Roxy Theatre.

Officials mentioned that over time, it has become a well-established part of the cultural landscape in the region. Patrons watch movies from their cars, in a landscape that imitates the classic American drive-in style, while continuing to aim at a contemporary audience.

“You still arrive at the site by car, of course,”

Says Emile Vanpol, chairman of Youth Centre Club 9.

How the 36th Drive-In Movies in Koersel evolved over the years

Cars have evolved, with many models now using DAB radios or automatic systems that turn off after idling. To adapt, the organisers hand out FM transmitters to visitors whose cars cannot pick up the signal. They are also ready for vehicles that need restarting during the night and take extra measures to avoid disruptions. Car headlights are covered with curtains to make sure no glare interferes with the films.

At the Drive-In Movies in Koersel, visitors with a classic car receive special treatment. Owners of vintage models are given a ticket discount and are placed in the front row.

“The drive-in will always be a unique experience in Limburg. It’s a tradition we’ve kept alive all these years. That’s what makes it special for us as a youth centre,”

Says Emile proudly.

Preparations for the new edition were completed last week with the installation of the large outdoor screen. From today, Aug 25, 2025, the Koersel youth centre will begin showing a program of 7 films. Families, film lovers, and first-time visitors will all find titles that suit their interests.

Tickets are available in advance through The Roxy Theatre, which manages the sales and bookings. With all the technical and organisational details arranged, the organisers are ready to welcome guests to another year of this well-known cultural event in Beringen.

The Drive-In Movies in Koersel began in 1989, when youth club Club 9 and The Roxy Theatre joined forces to bring a new cultural activity to Beringen. What started as a small local initiative has grown into one of the longest-running drive-in cinema events in Belgium, now celebrating its 36th edition.
