4 Interesting Music Facts You May Not Know About, Featuring Sting, Toto, and More
Want to learn some interesting music facts you may not have heard before? Here are four fun tidbits you can pull out at your next trivia night, or squirrel away as obscure knowledge.
Sting Sat on the Piano While Recording “Roxanne”
Ever wonder what caused the atonal note and laughter at the beginning of “Roxanne” by The Police? According to frontman Sting, this fun music fact came to be because he accidentally sat down on the keyboard while the band was recording. The resulting weird note and laughter stayed in the final version of the song.
When asked to explain the moment by a Dutch radio DJ, Sting said, “It’s a piano chord, but I played it with my a**.
“There was an upright piano right next to me, and I was singing, and I just wanted to rest,” he continued. “The piano lid was open, so I sat and I played that chord. I think it’s A Demolished. It just made me laugh, so it’s on the record.”
Toto Was the Backing Band for Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’
It’s a fact that Toto is well known for their hit song “Africa,” but mostly the band was made of a group of session musicians. Because of that, they have played on numerous albums for other people. One notable album that many members of Toto performed on was Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
Steve Lukather often expressed frustration that Toto wasn’t recognized more for their contributions as a backing band, or even a band in their own right. Most people know “Africa” and that’s it, even though it’s probably the farthest from what Toto’s actual work is like.
Flea Voiced a Character on ‘The Wild Thornberrys’
While it’s more of an adjacent music fact, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea was responsible for one recognizable character on the Nickelodeon show The Wild Thornberrys. Flea voiced the wild child Donnie, who speaks mainly in babbles and animal sounds.
According to Flea, Donnie “doesn’t think about the ramifications of things before he does them, he just does them.” In a promo video for Nickelodeon in 2002, Flea demonstrated his voice acting skills. Watching Donnie’s incomprehensible voice coming out of Flea’s mouth is truly a sight to behold.
The Guys From LMFAO Have Strong Ties to Motown
The electronic dance duo LMFAO was comprised of Redfoo and Sky Blu, but their real names reveal something interesting about them. Stefan Gordy and Skylar Gordy are directly related to Motown founder Berry Gordy.
Stefan is Gordy’s youngest son, while Skylar is Gordy’s grandson. He’s also the son of Stefan’s half-brother, Berry Gordy IV, making him Stefan’s half-nephew. Additionally, Stefan’s half-brother is Rockwell, known for the hit “Somebody’s Watching Me”, and he’s a second cousin once removed of former president Jimmy Carter.
