We got to drive the Tata Nexon.ev for a week. The Nexon.ev has for long been the best selling EV in the Indian market till now and here are 5 reasons as to why that may be the case.

Tata sent us to try the 45 kWh version of the Nexon.ev. Here are 5 reasons as to why it is so dominating in the Indian market.

Everyone is pretty familiar with the Nexon.ev. The Nexon itself is quite popular and the Nexon.ev has been one of the highest selling EVs in the Indian market. We got to drive the Nexon.ev for a week where we drove it around the city and got to experience how it is to live with.

The Nexon.ev has been out for quite some time now and most have covered every nook and cranny of the vehicle anyway so we went to find out what makes it so popular among EV buyers in India. So here are 5 reasons why the Tata Nexon.ev is one of the most popular EVs in India.

The Right Size

I love small cars but in the EV space, there is a certain lack of small cars in the Indian market. There is the MG Comet EV which is too small and then there is the Tata Tiago.ev which is also a small vehicle. Others are just too large and expensive and the Nexon.ev fits in the right space. It is big enough to give you the feeling of a larger more premium vehicle while not dwarfing you by other big SUVs yet small enough to drive comfortably in the city limits which is where I drive most of my cars most of the time.

The Nexon.ev was easy to park and maneuver while also offering a raised up SUV stance which gives you a better view of the road. It has ample ground clearance, good cabin space and also a very larger boot, in fact the largest boot in its segment. We also loved how the Nexon.ev doesn’t shout in your face that it is an EV and looks more or less like the regular Nexon.

Ample Range

Range is one of the biggest concerns of EV owners. Tata introduced the 45 kWh battery pack version of the Nexon.ev a while back and this was the one which we got to test. It had ample range. With a full charge and using the AC in humid Delhi weather, we got an estimated range of around 350 kms. Charging times were also pretty good with the fast charger and we were topping the vehicle in about 1 hour 30 minutes at a 60 kW charger. 350 kms is good range for a car of this size and in daily driving with nearly 50 kms of travel a day, we did not find ourselves feeling the range anxiety.

Loaded With Features

The Nexon.ev is also loaded with a lot of features. It gets a panoramic sunroof, a 12.5-inch infotainment screen, a JBL sound system which is one of the best in class, LED lights all round, a digital drivers display which can also display full maps, blind view monitor, 360-degree camera and even ventilated seats. Tata has taken care of all major features that an Indian customer wants and lusts after in today’s day and age.

Great Dynamics

The Nexon.ev being inherently derived from the Nexon has brilliant dynamics. It has a very supple ride, as is with all Tata cars and handles pretty well for what it is. It also is quite powerful and the electric motor produces 143 bhp and 215 Nm of torque. If there is anything that Tata has going for it, its the dynamics of their vehicles.

Value

The Nexon.ev also offers incredible value in its segment. Well, the fact is that there is not much in the segment to start with but overall in the world of EVs, the Nexon does have quite a lot of things going for it. The only competition currently is the MG Windsor which is an interesting product as well. The Nexon.ev starts from Rs 12.49 lakh (ex-showroom) but the top of the line models go all the way up to Rs 16.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The value proposition of the Nexon.ev is unmatched especially with Tata offering good discounts on these models quite often.

What Could Be Better?

The Nexon.ev was great but there are a lot of things that we would like to be better in future iterations of this vehicle. Being a Nexon underneath, it has all the inherent problems carried over as well. The fit and finish leaves a lot to be desired still and this would be crucial in terms of buyer perspective as more and more players enter the market with better products. The Nexon.ev will forever be the flag bearer of popularisation of EVs in the Indian market and Tata should really bank on its first mover advantage.
