5 Seconds Of Summer star Calum Hood wants fans to dance and cry when they hear his new music.
The Australian band’s bassist has dropped debut solo effort ORDER chaos ORDER, and it gets you thinking and moving you at the same time.
Asked what Calum wants to achieve with his project he replied: “Hopefully we can cry and dance. Cry and dance seem to be the main thing.”
He’s not wrong, songs like Don’t Forget You Love Me ponder big issues from despair and loss to love and anxiety. It’s a big change from the pop hits they once played supporting One Direction.
“I think it’s a normal feeling for people to be feeling that deeply, and to be able to verbalise that is a privilege of a songwriter and being an artist,” he mused on his emotionally charged lyrics. “I felt like, these are real things that occur in my brain, and I think it’s nice to be able to normalise that kind of deepness within the spectrum of how someone thinks, I guess.

“There’s some songs that are very brutally honest, that are very direct, and some leave more room for imagination. I just wanted to find a balance between people really getting to know me and then also leaving it up to them to decide.”
Calum is the last member of 5SOS to go solo after successful records by bandmates Ashton Irwin and Luke Hemmings, while Michael Clifford’s Sidequest LP was announced earlier this year.
In fact Calum probably wouldn’t have bothered going solo had it not been for his friends: “My bandmates inspired me… the unknown. Like, going into the unknown and not really knowing what was on the other side inspired my curiosity and my willingness to submit to the notion of being an artist.”

It’s an impressive debut and one that also allows Calum to examine his heritage: “It’s such a huge part of who I am. I’m a hugely family-oriented man, and I find a lot of my strength and a lot of my solidarity within myself derives from my family and my culture being Scottish and Māori, and so it’s a part of me that I think it would be a loss to not talk about it.”
Calum hopes to tour the album later this year while 5 Seconds Of Summer are expected back in the studio towards the end of 2025.

THE 5SOS star gets personal on this impressive solo debut. The lyrics ponder complex life issues but musically it posseses a joie de vivre, none more blissed out than Call Me When You Know Better. Tunes like Endless Ways are endearingly kooky and Calum does curious things with his voice throughout, even birthing an entirely new genre – murmur rock on I Wanted To Stay. File this LP next to DJO.
