81 lakh in a day: Delhi Metro logs its highest-ever passenger footfall in single day – Infrastructure News

There is a reason why people call Delhi Metro the lifeline of the national capital. Fast and mostly packed with passengers, these public transport rails enable economic travel across Delhi and NCR. The latest development further cements the view that Delhi metro is in fact the lifeline. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on August 8 set a new ridership record, with 81,87,674 passenger journeys, the highest single-day figure since the network began operations.

The milestone came on the eve of Rakshabandhan. The festive rush is known for heightened travel demand across the national capital region. To handle the surge, the DMRC ran 92 additional train trips on August 8 and scheduled a further 455 extra trips for Rakshabandhan day, August 9. DMRC announced the record on X.

Passengers complain about heavy footfalls

While the record remains, social media buzzed with mixed reactions from commuters, news agency IANS reported. Several users posted videos and photos of overflowing platforms and tightly packed coaches on the Yellow, Blue and Violet lines. Many described their journeys as “extremely packed” and “stressful”, while others acknowledged that extra services helped but festival footfall still made boarding difficult, the report stated.

The Delhi Metro network currently spans nearly 400 km, linking Delhi with cities like Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Faridabad and Bahadurgarh.

Wall collapse at metro construction site

In other news, traffic near Delhi Airport was severely affected on Saturday after a section of the Mahipalpur–Mehrauli Road caved in. The cave in was triggered by a wall collapse at an under-construction Delhi Metro site.

After the wall collapse, the Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory for motorists travelling from Fortis Hospital towards Mahipalpur, urging them to take alternative routes.
