Queen is one of many legacy acts whose fate on the Billboard charts changes from week to week. Sometimes, the group sees one song or album rise across a number of rankings, while in other instances, the opposite can be true. In some cases, an ascent or descent is tied to something specific, such as a new release or an important sync that reminds people how much they love the band’s music. At other times, competition isn’t nearly as fierce, and interest in Queen’s catalog seems to rise entirely on its own.
This time around, Queen’s Greatest Hits is growing in popularity again. The title appears on five Billboard charts, climbing on four of them, and even managing to re-enter one.
The band’s collection of massive smashes breaks back onto the Top Album Sales chart this week. There isn’t nearly as much competition as usual on Billboard’s ranking of the bestselling titles in the country, so there’s more space for projects that have been selling well for years to find a home once more. This frame, Greatest Hits by Queen re-enters at No. 49, in second-to-last place on the sales roster.
Queen’s Greatest Hits soars to important positions on two related rankings this frame. The band regains its control over the Top Hard Rock Albums chart as the compilation steps up from No. 2 to No. 1. Last week’s winner, Parasomnia by Dream Theater, opened in first place and then immediately disappeared.
The collection of beloved tunes has now spent 193 weeks at No. 1 on the Top Hard Rock Albums roster. That’s nearly half of the 425 frames it has managed to hold on somewhere on the roster.
At the same time that Greatest Hits tops the hard rock-only list again, it also returns to the top 10 on the Top Rock Albums chart. This frame, Queen’s collection jumps from No. 12 to No. 10, re-entering the highest tier on the list of the most-consumed rock full-lengths and EPs in the nation.
Queen’s Greatest Hits is also growing on the final two tallies it manages to find a home on this time around. It approaches the top 10 on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums chart, pushing three spaces to No. 13. It climbs 10 rungs on the Billboard 200, settling once more at No. 67.
