India is set to witness a revolutionary leap in transportation with the introduction of its first hyperloop train between Mumbai and Pune. This ambitious project aims to drastically reduce travel time between the two cities from the current 3-4 hours to just 25 minutes. According to reports, each hyperloop pod will have a seating capacity of 24 to 28 passengers. Hyperloop technology, a high-speed transportation system, operates within a vacuum tube, enabling it to reach speeds of up to 1,000 km per hour. The first successful test of a hyperloop train was conducted in 2019 by Hardt Hyperloop.

As per media sources, the Spanish company Zeleros is actively involved in developing the hyperloop system. Apart from the Mumbai-Pune corridor, Indian Railways is also exploring the possibility of introducing a hyperloop between Bengaluru and Chennai, further revolutionizing high-speed travel in the country.  Currently, the Vande Bharat Express holds the title of the fastest train in India, with plans for bullet trains on the horizon.

If successful, this project will mark a significant milestone in India’s transportation sector, offering an ultra-fast, efficient, and futuristic travel solution for passengers.

How does the Hyperloop work?

The Hyperloop is a futuristic mode of transportation that combines cutting-edge technology to enable ultra-fast travel. Here’s how it functions:

  • Vacuum-Sealed Tubes – The train operates inside a near-vacuum environment, significantly reducing air resistance and allowing for higher speeds.
  • Magnetic Levitation (Maglev) – Instead of conventional wheels, the train floats on magnetic fields, eliminating friction and ensuring a smooth ride.
  • High-Speed Acceleration – The pods are propelled using electric propulsion systems, enabling rapid acceleration to speeds of up to 1,000 km/h.
  • Energy Efficiency – The absence of air resistance and surface friction makes the Hyperloop highly energy-efficient, reducing power consumption compared to traditional trains or airplanes.
  • Automated Control Systems – Advanced AI-driven automation monitors and manages operations, ensuring safety, precision, and efficiency.

India’s first cargo Hyperloop by 2027-28

Pune-based startup Quintrans Hyperloop is gearing up to revolutionize transportation in India with the country’s first operational hyperloop cargo system, expected to be launched between 2027 and 2028, as per media reports.

The high-speed transport solution aims to enhance inter-city connectivity for freight movement between major Indian cities such as Mumbai-Pune, Chennai-Bengaluru, and Delhi-Chandigarh. By leveraging vacuum tube technology and magnetic levitation, the system will enable ultra-fast cargo transportation, significantly reducing delivery times and improving logistics efficiency.

About Hyperloop technology

The Hyperloop train is poised to outpace airplanes. Although the concept is not entirely new—Elon Musk first introduced it in 2013 as a high-speed travel solution between Los Angeles and San Francisco—several countries, including India and Japan, have actively pursued its development.

India, in particular, has made significant strides in bringing the Hyperloop to reality. With projects like the Mumbai-Pune corridor and plans for cargo hyperloop systems, the country is emerging as a key player in this futuristic mode of transport.
