‘Harry Potter’s Lucius Malfoy Actor Jason Isaacs Reveals a Heartbreaking Fact That It Was Not Fun Making the Movies

Jason Isaacs is best known for giving life to Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter film franchise, and has said something that will probably make you shed a few tears if you’re a fan of the wizarding world. In the same spirit as his character in the movies, Isaacs is not exactly joyful when he reminisces about playing the character and says that the movies “weren’t that much fun to make.”

Isaacs was featured on the BBC’s talk show The One Show, where he spoke about his career. Having appeared films like The Patriot and TV shows like The OA and, most recently, The White Lotus, he played the antagonist Lucius Malfoy in six of the eight Harry Potter movies. Lucius is the father of Draco Malfoy, Harry’s enemy throughout his run at Hogwarts. Although Isaacs wasn’t typecast for his role in the Harry Potter universe, it’s undeniable that Malfoy is one of his most important characters in terms of raising his Hollywood profile even higher than it already was at the time. Nevertheless, it seems that he just didn’t have the time of his life when making the movies about the young wizard:

“Even though I was in the films, when I’ve taken the godchildren or nephews and nieces to the tour, and the thing comes up and suddenly you’re in the Great Hall, every time I burst out in tears. It’s incredibly moving and overwhelming. See, there’s some magic that happened in those stories and in those books, initially in the films, it’s a terrible confession to make–they weren’t that much fun to make because it’s quite boring making big special effects films.

“However, the pleasures all come afterwards when I see and meet people, for whom their lives were changed by it and still people are reading it and sharing it with their children.”

10 Ways HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Reboot Can Be Different From the Movies

For the most part, the ‘Harry Potter’ movies followed the novels like a blueprint, but there are several things that the TV show can improve upon.

The Future of the ‘Harry Potter’ Franchise Is Promising but Risky

HBO is currently developing a TV show that will revive the franchise and give it a fresh look for modern audiences. Even though the last film was released less than 15 years ago, Warner Bros. is on board to capitalize on the success that Harry Potter still represents. But does this mean that anything Harry Potter-related will be successful?

We all witnessed the Harry Potter craze when, in 2001, young readers saw their favorite book brought to life at the same time Tolien fans were being blown away by Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies, and at a time when fantasy was big business again. After Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the first film in the series, the legacy grew on the back of J.K. Rowlings novel series. Over the years, the cast of the movie became synonymous with the roles they played, making it very hard to imagine anyone else playing some of those roles again so soon.

Every decision taken from now on will face public scrutiny. J.K. Rowling’s involvement is already a controversial subject, but the casting decisions seem to be the ones that make the Earth shake whenever rumors surface. A few days ago, the incredible John Lithgow confirmed the rumor that he had been cast as Dumbledore in the new Harry Potter series, seemingly being offered the role after first choice, Mark Rylance, was unable to accept due to personal tragedy. At the time, the internet blew up. We can’t imagine what will happen when HBO finds some of its other iconic leads, including the boy who will have the burden of following Daniel Radcliffe as the titular wizard.
