Malaysia’s export of wood furniture grew 8.4% to RM9.9bil last year

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s wood furniture exports recorded a total of RM9.9bil last year, says Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.

The Plantation and Commodities Minister said this marked an 8.4% increase from 2023, with wood furniture exports also making up almost half of timber exports last year (RM22.9bil).

“This is a testament to the dedication and commitment of our local manufacturers who have consistently upheld high-quality standards to meet international market demands,” he said in his address at the opening of the Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF) here on Saturday (March 1).

Johari said the RM22.9bil in timber exports last year also marked a 4.9% increase from the year before.

“This achievement positions the timber industry as the third largest contributor of our commodity exports,” he said.

Johari said MIFF played a pivotal role in shaping and elevating Malaysia’s furniture industry.

He said the platform enables businesses to showcase craftsmanship, foster new partnerships and explore the latest trends in design and manufacturing.

“MIFF rightfully earns its place among the world’s top ten furniture trade shows and proudly stands as Southeast Asia’s largest and longest-running furniture fair,” he said.

Johari’s speech was read out by his deputy, Datuk Chan Foong Hin.

Speaking to reporters later, Chan urged for more collaboration with related bodies, saying how the public-private partnership was important in bringing the timber and furniture industry to the next phase.

MIFF founder and chairman Datuk Tan Chin Huat said they were targeting a 5% increase in sales from last year’s edition, which secured cumulative sales exceeding US$1.28bil with participation from 714 exhibitors.

He said the fair served as more than just a furniture trade platform.

“It’s a dynamic ecosystem that nurtures creativity and innovation in the industry,” he said.

Among the highlights this year, Tan said, was the Panasonic Housing Solutions showcase, reflecting MIFF’s commitment to sustainability.

Under this initiative, leading Malaysian manufacturers transform pool palm trunks into regenerated woodboard, demonstrating our industry’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing.

Tan stressed MIFF’s dedication in nurturing the next generation of furniture designers while connecting them with established industry players.

“This unique blend of commerce and creativity makes MIFF an essential catalyst for innovation in the furniture industry,” he said.

Also present were Star Media Group (SMG) group chief executive officer Chan Seng Fatt and SMG chief operating officer Lydia Wang.

The 31st edition of MIFF showcases close to 750 exhibitors from across 12 countries and regions.

It spans 100,000 square meters across the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre and the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur.

Some 20,000 visitors from 140 countries and regions are expected to attend the fair.

MIFF is Southeast Asia’s largest and leading export-oriented furniture trade show, showcasing the widest selection of Malaysian-made wood furniture for homes and offices.

Since 1995, MIFF has been a one-stop platform connecting a wider community of more than 20,000 buyers from across 140 countries and regions.
