Kerala Film Chamber: Kerala Film Chamber plans token strike; actor pay dispute to be addressed separately

(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) The Kerala Film Chamber and the producers’ association are set to stage a token strike soon to address various concerns affecting the Malayalam film industry.

According to On Manorama, a crucial meeting to finalize the date will be finalised at the Film Chamber’s office in Kochi on March 5.

Speaking about the strike, Saji Nanthyattu, general secretary of the Kerala Film Chamber, stated that the protest aims to highlight key issues such as exemption from double taxation and securing industry status for Malayalam cinema. However, the issue of high actor remuneration, which has been a major point of debate, will not be included in the strike. Instead, a separate discussion will be held with the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) to resolve the matter.

Reportedly, Saji also clarified that an indefinite strike will be considered based on the outcome of the token strike. Recently, the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce and the producers’ association held a meeting to address various industry challenges. During the discussions, they took a firm stance against producer Antony Perumbavoor, who had leveled allegations against senior producer Suresh Kumar. The film chamber, along with producers, distributors, and exhibitors, has joined forces to push for the upcoming strike.

While the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) initially extended their support for the strike, they later withdrew, citing concerns over its impact on the industry.

Reportedly, FEFKA officials were also unhappy with the internaal conflicts within the producers’ association, which influenced their decision to step back.

Meanwhile, AMMA, which recently conducted an emergency meeting, has distanced itself from the strike. The organization expressed dissatisfaction with the producers’ allegations about high actor salaries. AMMA further clarified that any decision regarding actor remuneration would only be taken once a new executive committee is formed.

On the other hand, producer Antony Perumbavoor had recently deleted the Facebook post against producer G. Suresh Kumar as the tensions soared.
