No fuel for vehicles older than 15 years in Delhi from April 1
New Delhi: Is your vehicle older than 15 years? Come April 1, get ready to keep such vehicles in the garage, as there is no chance for refuelling. The announcements come as part of Delhi’s serious efforts to combat air pollution, which is one of the biggest challenges for the city.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has banned overage vehicles, defined as petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles over 10 years of age, in the National Capital Region.
On Saturday, Delhi Environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa announced that overage vehicles will not be allowed to refuel in the capital from March 31. After a meeting with officials to discuss measures to combat air pollution in the national capital, Sirsa said the government is taking stringent steps to curb vehicular emissions and pollution.
Petrol pumps will have tools to identify old vehicles
“The meeting focused on key policy decisions, including restrictions on older vehicles, mandatory anti-smog measures, and the transition to electric public transport. We are installing gadgets at petrol pumps which will identify vehicles older than 15 years, and no fuel will be provided to them,” Sirsa said to the media.
Further, teams would also be deployed to identify vehicles which are over 15 years old.
“This team will oversee strict implementation starting April 1. Additionally, we will intensify scrutiny of heavy vehicles entering Delhi to ensure they meet prescribed environmental standards before being allowed entry,” Sirsa added.
90% of CNG buses to be replaced with electric vehicles
Furthermore, Sirsa said that by December 2025, nearly 90 per cent of Delhi’s public CNG buses will be retired and replaced with electric buses, aligning with the government’s initiative to promote cleaner and more sustainable public transport
The government would also make it mandatory for big hotels, office complexes, construction sites, as well as Delhi airport, to install anti-smog guns on the premises.
