Mahindra surges past Hyundai to become India’s number 2 automaker – Car News
Mahindra achieved domestic sales of 50,420 units, reflecting a 19% growth, while Hyundai reported sales of 47,727 units.
The Indian automotive sector is witnessing history in the making as Mahindra & Mahindra overtook Hyundai Motor India to become the second-largest passenger vehicle manufacturer in February 2025. Mahindra has seen an unprecedented 19% growth year-on-year last month as it sold 50,420 units in the domestic market. Veejay Nakra, President, Automotive Division, M&M Ltd, “In February, we clocked SUV sales of 50,420, a growth of 19% and 83,702 total vehicles, a growth of 15%. This strong performance is a result of a continued positive momentum for our SUV portfolio.”
Mahindra SUVs charge ahead
Is this a turn of the tide that should worry Hyundai or it is just a flash in the pan for Mahindra? It’s a tale of two manufacturers who have taken different paths. Before we dive into all this, let’s take a look at the numbers. As mentioned earlier, Mahindra announced a 19% YoY growth, while its competitors, Hyundai and Tata Motors registered a 4% and a 9% drop respectively.
Mahindra has been on a relentless drive, launching a series of new SUVs. It all started with its flagship ICE SUV, the XUV700, in 2021, followed by the Scorpio N in 2022. In 2024, the company introduced the Thar Roxx and 3X0, and in 2025, it introduced two electric SUVs — the BE 6 and the XEV 9e.
To give you an idea of how mindboggling Mahindra’s numbers are, the BE 6 and the XEV 9e received a record 30,179 bookings on the day racking up Rs 8,472 crores. Mahindra’s record-breaking sales are becoming legendary. In 2022, the Scorpio N stunned with 25,000 bookings in a single minute and 100,000 in just half an hour. But even that pales in comparison to the Thar Roxx, which shattered expectations last year, racking up a staggering 176,218 bookings in just 60 minutes.
Hyundai remains optimistic
Hyundai, on the other hand, might have to go back to the drawing board as it continues to heavily rely on the Creta. The midsize segment SUV continues to be the best seller in its class, but the other vehicles in the Hyundai portfolio need to propel their sales numbers. Hyundai recorded domestic monthly sales of 47,727 units and export sales of 11,000 units. The Korean manufacturer continues to see a growth of 6.8% YoY in export sales in February 2025.
Commenting on HMIL sales, Tarun Garg, Whole-time Director and Chief Operating Officer, Hyundai Motor India Limited said, “With a 6.8% YoY growth in export sales in February 2025, we are witnessing increasing global demand for our Made-in-India products, reflecting Hyundai’s strong acceptance worldwide. By optimizing exports, we will continue to reinforce HMIL’s position as a key export hub for Hyundai Motor Company. On the Domestic Sales front, despite geopolitical challenges, we remain optimistic that the proposed tax reforms in the Union Budget 2025 and improved liquidity will provide the much-needed demand boost to the market.”
