submitted

The barbecue champion for the state of Arkansas will be decided at an event hosted by the University of Arkansas’ Department of Animal Science on Saturday, March 15.

Officially sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society, the Arkansas state BBQ champion will be named following judging at Boots, Brews and BBQ at the Pauline Whitaker Animal Science Center.

Tickets are available to the public, with admission running from 2-5 p.m. The $50 ticket includes 10 one-ounce samples from teams in the contest, chips and four beverages, plus live music and the opportunity to vote on the Tyson Foods People’s Choice Award for pulled pork.

For attendees aged 21 and over, the four beverages can be used at the bar station.

The musical acts scheduled are Meadowlark from 2-3:30 p.m., and Arlan and the Professor from 3:30-5 p.m.

“We’ve discussed a BBQ contest for several years, and we are excited for it to finally happen on March 15,” said Mike Looper, head of the Department of Animal Science. “It’s great to see so much interest from BBQ teams from six states.”

All proceeds from ticket sales go to the Department of Animal Science in U of A’s Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences. The fundraiser supports the department’s general scholarship fund, and student competition teams in ranch horse, livestock judging, equine judging and meats quiz bowl.

“It’s a fun way to support animal science students and programs while enjoying great BBQ and live music,” said Looper. “This event also allows us to get student volunteers involved in coordinating a large event that is fundraising for them through scholarships and competitive teams.”

Approximately 25 teams are currently scheduled to compete with the winner determined by KC Barbecue Society sanctioned judges.
